Since April 2016 a Local Authority has been able to add a premium to any Council Tax charge providing that the resultant monies are used in respect of Social Care spending.
How much can they add ?
Councils will be able to increase their Council Tax charge by an extra 2% without a referendum being required, where the monies are being used to fund Social Care. This rise is on top of any annual increase which is allowed so charges may be increased by up to 4% in total.
Changes from April 2017
With effect from April 2017 the Government have announced that a Local Authority will be given powers to increase the 2% Social Care Premium to 3% rather than the existing 2%.
